renovation ludwig space ⎪ klenze palais, munich

January 30th, 2023

The ludwig space gallery is on the ground floor of the historic Klenze Palais, right on Odeonsplatz. The architect Leo von Klenze - Schinkel's opponent in Munich - built the noble palace around 1820.
Dott. Arch. André Behncke, architect Milan-Munich (Elmau Castle, InterConti Düsseldorf, FTI Munich headquarters) is responsible for the new interior design of the ludwig space gallery.
His conversion was inspired by the French architect Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) and his revolutionary design "La Maison de Verre" (in English: glass house).
The concept is to distinguish the subsequent installation from the historical substance and to make it recognizable as such. The black-lacquered metal columns quote Mies van der Rohe's National Gallery with their cross-shaped floor plan. Mirrored surfaces dissolve fixtures. Based on Chareau: With glass and metal, the contemporary elements should speak a different language than the historical substance.
